Route: Feldberg – Feldberg Pass – Titisee-Neustadt
The Feldberg Pass is the second highest mountain pass in Germany reaching an altitude of 1.233m. Its location is in the state of Baden-Württemberg, south of the impressive Feldberg peak in the Black Forest.
The Feldberg is the highest summit in Baden-Württemberg and the highest in Germany outside of the Alps, reaching an altitude of 1.493m. Most of the area around the Feldberg peak is part of a nature reserve, the largest in the entire state. Once you go there you will surely see its beauty and appreciate the area and not only for the drive.
Feldberg Pass drive
The road to the pass is called Bundesstraße 317 (Federal Highway B317). The entire route is 17 km long and connects the towns of Feldberg and Titisee-Neustadt.
The Feldberg Pass road has a maximum slope gradient of 10%, a generous width over its entire length and is open all year round. This route is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Black Forest while driving. The only downside is that, due to its popularity, the road can become rather busy at certain times in the day. To avoid all this it’s best to start your drive towards the Feldberg Pass early in the morning or in the evening.
Approached from the southwestern side, the Feldberg Pass road has numerous hairpin bends. It climbs 483m over a distance of around 5 km. From the northeastern side the road is less winding but by no means less spectacular.
Scenic views around the Feldberg Pass
This amazing mountain road has some of the most beautiful panoramic views in Germany, especially in winter time. As soon as you reach the highest point at an altitude of 1.233m, you can admire the entire Vosges mountain range and on clear days even catch a glimpse of the Palatinate Forest.
At the top of the pass you will find a generous parking lot and lots of restaurants serving delicious German specialities. The Feldberg Pass also represents the starting point for many of the wonderful walks and trails in the Feldberg nature park.
Finally, at a small distance north of the pass you will encounter the idyllic Titisee lake, one of the top attractions of the Black Forest. The Titisee lake is the largest natural lake in the Black Forest and is a popular destination for tourists, with lots of outdoor activities. Here you can take a break, relax and admire the view or follow one of the many trails around the lake, go sailing or windsurfing.
