The Villacher Alpenstraße (English: The Villach Alpine Road) is a highly popular panoramic road located in the province of Carinthia, Austria. Said to offer some of the best views in the entire country, it connects the city of Villach-Möltschach with the Rosstratte View Point, located just below the region’s highest peak, the famous Dobratsch.
Conquering an altitude of 1.200 height meters over a distance of 20 km, the Villach Alpine Road will dazzle you with gorgeous views over the majestic Eastern Alps, beautiful mountain lakes and over the summits of the neighboring countries of Italy and Slovenia.
Open all year round, this amazing mountain road is part of a total of five premium alpine roads in Austria. With 7 hairpin bends, a maximum slope gradient of 10% and 116 switchback turns, Villacher Alpenstraße is a coveted destination for drivers, motorbike fans and cyclists from all over the world.
The Villacher Alpenstraße is a private road and starts from Villach, where the pay desk is found. An ancient settlement tracing its roots in the Roman era, Villach’s old town is one of the most picturesque in southern Austria.
The road will quickly take you up high via 4 turns and into the forest, along a wide route that leads amidst Carinthia’s oldest reservation, an area with an amazing variety of plants, birds and wildlife. The forest then gives way to large alpine meadows and steep slopes in the higher part of the road.
On this scenic road you will encounter a number of 11 amazing viewpoints from which you can choose to admire the landscape. Located at carefully selected places in order to provide the most unforgettable views one can imagine, it’s highly recommended to stop at some of these viewpoints on your way to the highest point.
At parking place No. 6 situated at a height of 1.403 m, you will find a beautiful alpine garden where, on an area of around 10.000 m², more than 800 species of alpine plants from three climate zones are looked after by volunteers. The garden is open every day, from early June to late August. The platform also provides a clear view over an enormous rock slide that happened a long time ago.
The final stage of the road is represented by the parking lot located at an altitude of 1.732 m, the “Rosstratte”, where you will find a charming sculpture park built in 2009 and an adventure playground for children. From here you can choose to follow one of the several hiking trails that lead to the summit of the Dobratsch or you can relax, admire the view and enjoy a cup of coffee or some delicacies from Carinthian cuisine at the Rosstrattenstüberl mountain inn.
